A collection of costume renderings and life impressions I've made over the last three years that excite me.

"An NYU production of 'In the Blood' by Suzan-Lori Parks, directed by Cristina Angeles. This design process began and ended with deep thought, consideration and collaboration. I was conscious to create clothes for these characters that accurately represented the stories of their lives. I began with Hester, designing a maternity dress that she would wear throughout the show. A constant reminder of her as a mother.

"The Real Housewives of the Restoration' and ‘Tis a Pity She’s a Housewife', were codesigned by Kindall Houston Almond and me as part of an NYU production. Both spaces took on typically heteronormative role playing, referencing Restoration texts in the Walker Theatre, and “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” in the Shubert Theatre, and viewed through a queer lens playground, gender blurring abounds. Kindall and I drew on the silhouettes and colors of 18th century undergarments, fused with modern day streetwear, for our design of The Real Housewives of the Restoration. We joyfully collaborated with Anton Volovsek (set) and Josh Martinez-Davis (lights) on a series of videos incorporating sexually explicit imagery and modern music corresponding to the themes in the space.

"Costume Design for Made by God', a new play at the Irish Repertory Theatre in February 2022. Written by Ciara Ní Chuirc and directed by Olivia Songer. Small town, Ireland, 1984; Ann, a fifteen-year-old girl, is found dead with her newborn baby in Our Lady’s Grotto at the edge of town. The tragedy rips Ireland apart and haunts it for years to come. Decades pass. American podcaster, Eva, travels to Ireland on a pilgrimage – of sorts. With her microphone in hand, she seeks to learn more about Ann and her final days, but her own secret past pursues her. She meets Michael, Ann’s boyfriend, and faith and feelings intertwine, as two strangers try to find peace.

Orla Long is an Irish costume designer based on both sides of the Atlantic. She holds an MFA in design from NYU Tisch and a BA in drama studies from Trinity College Dublin. She has gained extensive experience in the leading houses of the Irish theater industry both nationally and abroad. She continues to expand both her Irish and international career with collaborative storytelling at the heart of her practice.
